Sand Ramp Trail: Great Sand Dune National Park
Entering the Sand Ramp Trail from inside the Preserve section of Great Sand Dunes National park leads in to the wilderness area. As the trail borders the Dunes and the Rio Grande National Forest.
Sand Ramp Trail in the Preserve climbs from the four by four road up on a ridge. Taking your hike through the beginnings of an old growth forest.
After hiking through the open forest you descend down to Little Medano Creek and cross climbing up to the sage brush plains of sand between the dunes and the national forest
Once up on the sage plains and climbing the panoramic views open upon the landscape dazzling the mind with the expanse of the Sand Dunes.

Sand Ramp Trail allows views of some of the tallest dunes upon the 30 square miles of dunes.
Hiking the zone between dunes and forest is an abundant habitat for birds, many Mountain Bluebirds accompany you along the hike.
